Blue Jays Shift Rotation: Scherzer Gets Extra Rest Ahead of Yankees

UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays have made a crucial adjustment to their starting rotation ahead of a pivotal weekend series against the New York Yankees. Chris Bassitt will take the mound on Saturday, while three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer will start on Sunday, following a brief stint dealing with back tightness.

Scherzer, who is 41 years old, exited his last outing against the Milwaukee Brewers last Sunday due to discomfort. “Just wanted to give Max an extra day with the upper back thing feeling better. He threw a side yesterday,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider just before Friday’s series opener. This decision highlights the team’s commitment to ensuring Scherzer’s health as they push for a successful finish to the season.

Currently, Scherzer holds a record of 5-2 with a 4.11 ERA across 13 starts. Notably, he has performed better since August 1, posting a 3.36 ERA in his last five games. His recent history includes a significant absence from March 29 to June 25 due to right thumb inflammation, making every start critical as the Blue Jays strive for their first division title since 2015.

In addition to the rotation changes, Schneider provided updates on outfielder Anthony Santander, who has been sidelined since May 29 with a partially dislocated left shoulder. There is optimism that Santander could begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment as soon as Tuesday. “Tony’s here through the weekend ramping up right-handed,” Schneider noted, emphasizing the cautious approach to his recovery.

Before his injury, Santander had signed a $92.5 million, five-year contract but struggled offensively, hitting just .179 with six home runs and 18 RBIs. His injury occurred during a game in Anaheim, California, on May 8, when he attempted to catch a foul ball.

Additionally, the Blue Jays made further roster adjustments by recalling right-hander Braydon Fisher from Triple-A Buffalo and optioning Dillon Tate to the Bisons. These moves reflect the team’s strategic planning as they gear up for a critical stretch in the playoffs.

As the Blue Jays enter this series, they hold a three-game lead in the AL East over the Yankees, underscoring the importance of every game in this late-season push. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the team’s performance in the coming days.
