URGENT UPDATE: A free day of organ workshops and concerts is happening this Saturday, September 20, at the Hope Community Methodist Church in Newark, and community members are invited to join in. The event, titled “Pipe Dreams,” is a unique opportunity to explore the majestic world of the organ, with hands-on sessions and live performances for all ages.
The festivities will kick off with discovery workshops from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM for children aged ten to fourteen, followed by a session from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM for attendees over fourteen. Participants will learn how the organ works and even get to build a working model. This is an exceptional chance for young music enthusiasts to grasp the fundamentals of playing the organ.
In the afternoon, aspiring musicians can bring their favorite pieces for a guided play session. These will run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM for those under eighteen, and from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM for those eighteen and older. Established organists will provide instruction, offering insights into the unique qualities of the organ compared to other instruments.
To conclude this exciting day, a free concert will be held from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, featuring the church’s resident organists performing Bach’s renowned Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Attendees can enjoy tea and cakes following the concert, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all.
Dr. Stephen Bullamore, Director of Music at Newark Parish Church, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m really looking forward to sharing this event with everyone. The pipe organ is a wonderful instrument, and we will be exploring all dimensions of its existence – how it works, how to play it, and how it sounds.”
