US Envoy Advances Critical Minerals Agenda During Uzbekistan Visit

A senior official from the United States is actively promoting the country’s critical minerals agenda during a significant visit to Uzbekistan. Paolo Zampolli, the White House’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, arrived in Tashkent on August 28, 2025, with a mission to strengthen diplomatic ties and advance economic cooperation. This visit aligns with the Trump administration’s broader foreign policy objectives aimed at enhancing trade relations and access to Uzbekistan’s rich deposits of critical minerals.

Zampolli’s agenda in Uzbekistan includes high-level discussions with government officials, including a meeting with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. According to a statement from the Uzbek president’s office, the discussions focused on expanding the strategic partnership between the two nations and fostering multifaceted cooperation. The statement highlighted growing political dialogue and identified significant potential for collaboration in various sectors, including mineral resources, aviation, agriculture, and digital technologies.

The US Embassy in Tashkent emphasized Zampolli’s role in engaging with the Uzbek public. His itinerary features participation in events aimed at enhancing the United States’ image in Uzbekistan. Notably, Zampolli will join President Mirziyoyev in celebrating Uzbek Independence Day and meet with members of the Uzbek national soccer team, which is scheduled to compete in the World Cup tournament in the United States next year. Additionally, he will be present at the opening of American Corner Tashkent, a venue dedicated to promoting American values and culture.

This visit is part of a larger trend of increased diplomatic engagement between the United States and Uzbekistan. In April, during a meeting with Uzbek journalist, Jonathan Henick, the US envoy in Tashkent, praised what he termed an “unprecedented level” of diplomatic interaction in the early months of 2025. The renewed focus on Central Asia reflects a strategic interest in the region’s vast natural resources, particularly critical minerals that are essential for various high-tech industries.

Zampolli’s background as a business associate of former President Trump and his previous role as the ambassador of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica to the United Nations underscore his experience in international diplomacy. His current mission signifies a commitment to not only enhance economic ties but also to foster a positive perception of the US in Uzbekistan, a country that has been increasingly positioning itself as a key player in regional geopolitics.

As the visit unfolds, the impact on US-Uzbek relations and the potential for future cooperation in critical minerals and other sectors will be closely monitored by stakeholders on both sides. The strengthening of these ties could have lasting implications for trade and investment opportunities in Central Asia.
