The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for their first game of the season against the Indianapolis Colts, and tight end Darren Waller is working diligently to regain his form. After announcing his retirement in 2024, Waller made the decision to return to the NFL following a trade from the New York Giants to the Dolphins in July 2024. As the team prepares for kickoff, Waller is focused on overcoming the challenges of re-adjusting to the rigors of professional football.
Waller, 32, spoke candidly about his experience during training camp, noting that he must acclimate to the physical, mental, and emotional demands that come with the game. In an interview with Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post, he expressed his determination to “knock some rust off” before the season begins. “But I’m just grateful to be where I’m at today,” Waller added, emphasizing his positive outlook as he readies himself for the upcoming match.
Building Chemistry with Tua Tagovailoa
To regain his rhythm, Waller is focusing on developing a strong connection with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. “Just getting reps, getting time under tension, knowing how he’s getting the ball off when he hits his drop,” he explained. Waller is eager to familiarize himself with Tagovailoa’s playing style, allowing him to anticipate the quarterback’s actions during games. He added, “What that looks like for me is whipping my head around and having that ball come in, which I felt was a great start today.”
Waller’s commitment to refining his skills is critical, especially considering the Dolphins’ offensive strategy. With talented wide receivers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the field, Waller can add another layer of complexity to the team’s attack. Although he may not reach the 1,000-yard mark he achieved in his Pro Bowl seasons with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 and 2020, he remains a formidable presence for opposing defenses.
Concerns Over Offensive Toughness
During training camp, analysts observed issues regarding the Dolphins’ toughness, particularly during joint practices against the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. As Waller shakes off the rust, his physical style of play could be a vital asset in enhancing the team’s competitive edge. He is expected to bring not only skill but also a level of grit that could inspire his teammates.
In 2023, Waller recorded 53 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown with the Giants. While he is not anticipated to replicate his peak performance in 2025, the Dolphins are optimistic that his experience and talent will significantly enhance their offensive capabilities. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Waller to see how effectively he can integrate into the Dolphins’ dynamic lineup and contribute to their success on the field.
