UPDATE: In a shocking incident that unfolded in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, a father has been tragically shot and killed. Authorities have identified the victim as Kevin Doherty, 56, who was fatally shot shortly after dropping off his 6-year-old child at school on July 13, 2023.
The violence erupted around 8:50 a.m. on Thursday when Doherty reportedly confronted Snehal Ansh Srivasta, 26, who was seen spray-painting near Jordan Pond. Following a brief altercation, which began after Doherty took a photograph of Srivasta, gunfire rang out. During the 911 call, the dispatcher heard gunshots while Doherty was still on the line, after which he ceased communication.
Upon arrival, police found Doherty suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he later succumbed to his injuries. This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities confirm that it was a targeted attack.
After the shooting, Srivasta fled the scene, prompting a massive manhunt involving local police departments and Massachusetts State Police. Authorities quickly mobilized drones to locate him. He was ultimately found inside a nearby home on 29 Edgewater Ave., which bore numerous spray-painted slogans. After negotiations with the State Police Tactical Operations Team, Srivasta surrendered without further incident.
At his arraignment in Westborough District Court on Friday morning, prosecutors revealed that Srivasta did not possess a license to carry a firearm. The police are conducting a thorough investigation, including a search warrant executed at the home where Srivasta was found.
Officials are urging the community to come forward with any additional information. Chief Kevin Anderson of the Shrewsbury Police emphasized the need for vigilance and community cooperation in the wake of such a violent act.
As the investigation continues, residents are left grappling with the impact of this event on their community. What happens next will be closely monitored as authorities work to ensure safety and justice for Kevin Doherty and his grieving family.
