Vanguard Charitable announced that donors granted a staggering $3.5 billion to nonprofits in fiscal year 2025, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. This record total reflects the highest annual giving since the organization’s inception in 1997. The funds were allocated across nearly 248,000 grants, with the average grant size rising to approximately $14,000. A total of 62,950 nonprofits received support, encompassing a diverse range of causes, including human services, religion, education, health, and environmental initiatives.
Response to Immediate Needs
The increase in charitable contributions was particularly notable in the first half of 2025, coinciding with several natural disasters affecting various states. From January to June, grantmaking surged by 30% compared to the same period last year. During this time, nearly 13,000 grants totaling $110 million were dedicated to disaster relief efforts. This included $11.2 million allocated for hurricane response and $10 million designated for wildfire recovery.
Rebecca Moffett, president of Vanguard Charitable, emphasized the growing commitment of donors during uncertain times. “Our donors continue to demonstrate that generosity doesn’t pause during times of uncertainty, it grows,” she stated. Moffett highlighted that the increase in giving reflects not only a rise in funds granted but also a broader reach and support for a variety of organizations.
Trends in Philanthropy
Data from Vanguard Charitable indicates that more than half of all grant dollars—51.7%—were provided without restrictions, enabling nonprofits to allocate funds according to their most urgent needs. This figure has risen from 48.3% in fiscal year 2024. The leading areas of funding for 2025 included human services, religion, and education. Noteworthy recipients by grant volume included Doctors Without Borders, World Central Kitchen, and Samaritan’s Purse.
The reliability of donor-advised funds (DAFs) in providing ongoing support to nonprofits was also emphasized. A recent report revealed that 69% of annual grants are recurring, demonstrating an increasing trend in donor engagement over time. Over a five-year period, the average size of grants from recurring donors grew by 40%.
A Harris Poll commissioned by Vanguard Charitable found that 36% of Americans consider charitable giving a civic duty, especially during challenging times. This record-setting year underscores the significant role of donor-advised funds in not only addressing immediate needs but also in supporting nonprofits through ongoing challenges.
The remarkable achievements of Vanguard Charitable in 2025 showcase the resilience and generosity of individual donors, reflecting a broader commitment to philanthropy that promises to make a lasting impact across various sectors.
