Israel Plans Major Military Offensive in Gaza City by Mid-September

Israel is preparing for a comprehensive military operation in Gaza City, scheduled to begin in mid-September. This offensive will follow the mobilization of over 60,000 army reservists, who are set to report for duty on September 2, 2023. The Israeli government aims to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages still held captive.

According to Channel 12, around 1 million Palestinians currently residing in Gaza City will be ordered to evacuate starting as soon as Sunday. This directive comes as part of the Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) strategy to minimize civilian casualties while pursuing their military objectives.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz made a stark warning earlier this week, stating that the “gates of hell” would open for Hamas should the group fail to meet Israel’s cease-fire conditions. Katz asserted on social media platform X that the military campaign would continue until Hamas agrees to release all hostages and disarm. Currently, approximately 50 Israelis are believed to be in Hamas captivity, with around 30 presumed dead and 20 thought to be alive.

Hostage Negotiations and International Pressure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside senior officials, is pushing to expedite the military operation, citing the urgent need to address the dire conditions of the hostages. Despite the push for military action, the IDF has indicated the necessity of ensuring civilian evacuations and obtaining international legitimacy before commencing the operation.

Hamas has reportedly signaled a willingness to enter negotiations for a partial cease-fire, proposing to release 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 others in exchange for a 60-day truce. However, Netanyahu has insisted that any agreement must include the release of all remaining hostages.

In light of the ongoing impasse, Israeli negotiators are expected to engage in renewed discussions regarding hostages and cease-fire terms in the coming days. The new talks are set to take place outside of Doha, Qatar, or Cairo, Egypt, as both the US and Israel withdrew their teams from Doha last month.

Public Sentiment and Safety Concerns

As military preparations continue, public sentiment in Israel is increasingly focused on the safety of the hostages. Thousands gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday, calling for a resolution to the hostage crisis. Among the demonstrators was Liran Berman, whose brothers are among those abducted by Hamas. Berman cautioned that expanding military operations could endanger the lives of remaining hostages.

“There is a deal on the table. But deals do not last forever; their windows close fast and hard,” Berman stated. “This may be the last chance to save lives and to bring the fallen back.”

The situation remains fluid as both military and diplomatic efforts progress. Israel’s planned offensive in Gaza City is not only a strategic military move but also a response to the mounting pressure for the safe return of hostages amidst ongoing humanitarian concerns.
