URGENT UPDATE: A high-speed chase through Los Angeles took a bizarre turn late Friday night when the suspect, driving a reported stolen dark blue Infinity 250 sedan, stopped for gas. The chase, which began around 10 p.m. in the Wilshire area, escalated as the driver reached speeds of up to 100 mph, weaving recklessly through traffic.
Authorities confirm that the pursuit involved multiple freeways, including the 105, 110, 710, and 10 Freeways, as well as surface streets. Law enforcement attempted to maintain a safe distance due to the driver’s dangerous maneuvers, which included driving on the shoulder and navigating through crowded lanes.
The chase took a surprising twist when the suspect stopped at a Shell gas station located at Imperial Highway and Long Beach Boulevard in Lynwood. Eyewitnesses reported that he covered his face while filling up, glancing at the helicopter camera tracking him. After refueling, the chase resumed with the suspect accelerating recklessly once again.
As police resumed pursuit, they ultimately decided to pull back for safety reasons. The driver continued to evade capture through various neighborhoods until he abandoned the vehicle under the 10 Freeway overpass at Alameda Street, near the Fashion District. The vehicle collided with a light pole, but the suspect vanished from view, prompting police to search the area.
Authorities believe he may have escaped by carjacking another vehicle or being picked up by an accomplice. Notably, this escape happened at the same overpass where a suspect from a previous chase also fled from a stolen tanker truck.
As of now, the suspect remains at large, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The unfolding situation underscores the persistent challenges law enforcement faces with high-speed pursuits in urban areas.
