Electric bills in New Hampshire are set to rise significantly due to new rate changes that took effect on August 1, 2023. Customers of Eversource will notice a notable increase in their monthly statements, primarily due to higher energy supply costs driven by current market conditions.
The supply portion of the electric bill, which represents the cost of electricity purchased from suppliers on the regional wholesale market, has risen to 11.2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This change results in an average increase of $13.61 for residential customers using 600 kWh per month. Notably, nearly half of New Hampshire customers may not be affected by this supply rate change, as many either participate in community power programs or choose suppliers other than Eversource.
In addition to the supply rate increase, adjustments have also occurred within the delivery portion of the bill. Following a year-long review, the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission approved changes that will result in a $4.84 increase for customers using 600 kWh. This adjustment positions Eversource’s distribution costs in the middle range nationally while maintaining a strong reliability record.
Furthermore, there is an additional 46-cent increase related to a rate that changes annually, which is separate from the distribution rate review. These changes come amid a general rise in energy usage during the summer months, as customers often rely more on air conditioning and fans.
In light of these increases, Eversource is actively working to support its customers. The company encourages residents to review their supplier options and select plans that best suit their needs. The New Hampshire Department of Energy provides a comprehensive list of current offers from various suppliers, along with links for enrollment.
Customers are also urged to participate in the award-winning NHSaves® energy efficiency programs. During summer, New Hampshire residents typically consume about 20% more electricity, making energy-saving measures particularly effective in lowering bills.
For those who may find it challenging to pay their electric bills, Eversource offers assistance programs and flexible payment plans. The company has been hosting in-person events throughout the state to connect residents with available programs and provide guidance on managing energy costs. A schedule of these events, along with resources for managing summer electricity usage, can be found on the Eversource website.
As the summer progresses and energy demands remain high, Eversource is committed to helping customers navigate the complexities of rising electric costs. Residents are encouraged to reach out for support and explore ways to maintain energy efficiency in their households.
