A father from Long Island, Ryan Wosleger, has transformed his life from a disillusioned corporate worker to a celebrated artist, all through the simple act of packing his daughter’s lunch. As children prepare to return to school, Wosleger’s story illustrates how creativity can flourish even in the most ordinary circumstances. What began as a way to uplift his daughter has evolved into an inspiring art form that he credits with saving his life.
After spending 17 years in the insurance industry, Wosleger often felt unfulfilled. “I would compare it to treading water,” he explained. Despite working hard, he struggled to find satisfaction in his role, where his creative ideas were frequently overlooked. Then, in March 2020, the pandemic struck, prompting a significant turning point in his life.
Finding Purpose Through Art
During the early days of lockdown, Wosleger experienced feelings of anxiety and depression. It was through drawing with his daughter that he discovered a renewed sense of purpose. He began sending her to nursery school with creatively decorated snack bags, and soon noticed a change in both their spirits. “She wasn’t as homesick, and I realized that I was happier too,” he said.
Wosleger’s art evolved from simple bubble letters into intricate designs, transforming everyday brown paper bags into masterpieces. “When I started creating art with my daughter, she was starting to listen to me,” he recalled. “My voice is being heard. And it may be by my five-year-old daughter, but it’s being heard.” This realization spurred him to pursue a master’s degree in art education, allowing him to share his passion with others.
Inspiring Creativity in Others
Now, Wosleger teaches children and parents across Long Island how to turn ordinary lunch bags into extraordinary works of art. His daughter, Briar, has become the star of her cafeteria, receiving compliments from peers. “When you go to school and you pull out your lunch bag, what do your friends say?” asked Joelle Garguilo, an entertainment reporter. Briar beamed as she responded, “Oh my god, your dad is such a good artist. It makes me feel amazing. It makes me feel so special to have you.”
Wosleger treasures each of the bags he creates, planning to compile them into a book for Briar. “I keep every single bag I give to my daughter. I hope that she will be a ‘snack bag mom,'” he said. His journey from a corporate insurance professional to a beloved artist highlights the profound impact of creativity and the simple joys of parenthood.
Through the act of doodling and artistic expression, Wosleger has not only transformed his own life but has also created a lasting bond with his daughter, showing that art truly can be a lifeline.
