Patrick Mahomes candidly discussed the emotional ramifications of his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., being arrested for DWI just days before the much-anticipated Super Bowl LVIII. This revelation came during an episode of ESPN’s series, The Kingdom, which aired on August 20, 2024. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback expressed how his father’s third DWI charge significantly impacted his mindset leading into the game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Reflecting on the situation, Patrick stated, “It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it.” He noted that the public nature of the incident heightened his emotional distress. “I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can’t keep doing the same things,” he added, emphasizing the personal toll of the scandal.
Pat Mahomes Sr., who is 55 years old, echoed his son’s sentiments, admitting the embarrassment he felt about the situation. “For [my son] to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life,” he said. The former MLB player took full responsibility for his actions and acknowledged how they affected his family. He reached out to Patrick immediately after the incident, apologizing for diverting attention from his son’s focus on the Super Bowl.
In a further reflection on the incident, Brittany Mahomes, Patrick’s wife, noted that the event “finally” prompted Pat Sr. to realize the impact of his behavior on his children and grandchildren. The couple shares three young children: Sterling, aged 3; Bronze, aged 2; and Golden, who is 7 months old.
Pat Mahomes Sr. confessed that he had not recognized his drinking habits as problematic until now. He remarked, “It was just something that I’ve always done, just something that’s in the game.” He admitted to enjoying the privileges that came with being a professional athlete but acknowledged that it was time for change.
The DWI arrest occurred on February 1, 2024, in Tyler, Texas, one week prior to the Super Bowl. Following the incident, he was released from custody after posting a $10,000 bond. In an October 2024 video released by TMZ, Pat Sr. pleaded with law enforcement not to charge him, stating, “My son is getting ready to play in the f***ing Super Bowl. I am not drunk, I promise you.”
In the same video, he attempted to assure officers of his capability to handle the situation, requesting assistance in arranging a ride home rather than facing charges. “Dude, seriously? We don’t have stars from around here. I’m very, very knowledgeable and capable,” he added.
In August 2024, Pat Sr. pled guilty to the felony charge of DWI and subsequently served a 10-day sentence in county jail.
As the situation unfolded leading up to the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes addressed his father’s arrest during a press conference, stating, “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is. It’s a family matter, so I will just keep it to the family. That’s all I really have to say at this point.”
The emotional toll of this incident has reverberated through the Mahomes family as they navigate the balance between personal struggles and professional commitments. The episode of The Kingdom is available for streaming on ESPN+.
