Record $315K Paid for Historic 1939 Baseball HOF Program

UPDATE: A historic program from the first-ever National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony has just sold for a staggering $315,000 through Lelands Auctions, setting a new record for the highest amount ever paid for a baseball program. This monumental sale, which took place earlier today, has eclipsed the previous record of $241,500 set in 2011 for a 1903 World Series program.

The program, signed by all eleven living inductees at the June 12, 1939 ceremony, features legendary names such as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb (who famously signed it twice), Walter Johnson, and Cy Young. It is believed to be the only program of its kind with signatures from all inductees present that day, making it a rare collector’s item.

The consignor, whose parents attended the ceremony while engaged, shared a touching story about how his mother managed to collect these signatures. She obtained autographs from all living inductees, except for Cobb, who was late to the event. The consignor revealed, “My mother waited for Cobb, who only agreed to give his autograph if he could have a kiss.” After a brief kiss on the cheek, Cobb humorously signed the program twice, leading to the unique “Double Ty” signature.

The program also boasts additional signatures from other Hall of Famers, including Mel Ott and Lefty Grove, enhancing its historical significance. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), the program verifies the legitimacy of these celebrated signatures.

This record-breaking auction not only highlights the enduring legacy of baseball legends but also underscores the emotional connection fans have with the sport’s history. The inspiring story of the consignor’s mother, who sought to collect these autographs during a momentous occasion, adds a personal touch to this remarkable sale.

As baseball enthusiasts and collectors continue to seek rare memorabilia, this sale sets a new benchmark in the sports auction world. The historic program’s sale is a reminder of the deep-rooted passion for baseball and its legends, making it a topic sure to ignite discussions among fans and collectors alike.

Stay tuned for further updates on the auction and other notable sales in the world of sports memorabilia.
