Louisiana Takes Legal Action Against Roblox Over Child Safety

The state of Louisiana has initiated a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation, alleging that the gaming platform facilitates the distribution of child sexual abuse material and contributes to the sexual exploitation of minors. The lawsuit was filed by Liz Murrill, Louisiana’s attorney general, in the 21st Judicial District on August 14, 2025. During a press conference, Murrill criticized Roblox for prioritizing profits over the safety of children, stating, “It’s basically open season for sex predators on this app.”

The legal action seeks to hold Roblox accountable for enabling and distributing harmful content to children. Murrill emphasized that despite Roblox’s assurances of safety, the platform lacks fundamental protections for young users. In her statement, she noted that the state aims to prevent Roblox from violating the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act and misrepresenting the effectiveness of its safety features. Additionally, the state is pursuing civil penalties, attorney’s fees, and restitution.

According to the lawsuit, while Roblox has policies requiring parental permission for account creation, it does not enforce these rules effectively. The platform purportedly allows children to create accounts without confirming parental consent, raising significant concerns about user safety. The suit claims, “[For] years, Defendant has knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children across the United States, including in Louisiana.”

In response to the allegations, Roblox Corporation issued a statement on August 15, 2025, addressing what it described as “erroneous claims and misconceptions” regarding its safety protocols. The company asserted that millions of users engage with its platform daily for educational and entertainment purposes and that it takes user safety seriously. Roblox stated that any suggestion it intentionally places users at risk is untrue.

Roblox’s statement highlighted the implementation of 40 new parental controls and safety measures within the past year. The company mentioned features like rigorous text chat filters and restrictions preventing users under the age of 13 from direct messaging others. Roblox claims to take swift action against any violative material, utilizing a combination of artificial intelligence, user reports, and dedicated monitoring teams to ensure safety on the platform.

The firm reiterated its commitment to creating a secure online environment, stating, “We aim to create one of the safest online environments for users.” It acknowledged the ongoing challenges in maintaining safety and expressed dedication to continuous improvement.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications not only for Roblox but also for the broader gaming industry, as it raises critical questions about child safety and corporate responsibility in online environments. As the case unfolds, the focus will remain on the balance between user engagement and the protection of vulnerable populations in the digital space.
