Two American tourists drowned at Carnival’s newly opened Celebration Key resort on Grand Bahama Island on August 15, 2023. The incidents occurred just weeks after the $600 million resort began welcoming guests. According to officials from Carnival Cruise Line, the drownings involved passengers from two different ships visiting the private destination.
Carnival spokespersons confirmed that the “water emergency incidents” took place at the resort’s lagoon and beach area. A 79-year-old man was snorkeling when he became unresponsive shortly before noon. Despite the swift response from lifeguards and attempts to administer CPR, he was pronounced dead shortly after reaching the shore.
The second incident occurred around 14:30, involving a 74-year-old woman who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Both victims have been identified by the Royal Bahamas Police Force, which has launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Autopsies are being performed to determine the exact causes of death.
The 79-year-old man had been traveling with family on a six-day cruise aboard the Mardi Gras, departing from Port Canaveral, Florida. Meanwhile, the 74-year-old woman was on a four-day trip on the Carnival Elation from Jacksonville, Florida. In light of the tragic events, Carnival expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance.”
