Urgent Update: Durango’s Aquatic Center Faces Demolition Plans

BREAKING: The historic Durango-La Plata Aquatic Center, a cornerstone of community recreation since its opening in August 1958, is facing imminent demolition as part of a new redevelopment initiative. Local authorities confirmed that plans to remove the facility, which has served residents for over 40 years, were formally adopted in December 1999.

The aquatic center, located on land once owned by F.W. Kroeger, has become outdated and costly to maintain. Officials highlight the need for modern facilities that can better serve the growing population of Durango, Colorado. The decision follows extensive discussions among city leaders, civic organizations, and community stakeholders aimed at revitalizing the area surrounding the Fairgrounds.

The construction of the pool in 1958 was a collaborative effort involving the city, La Plata County, and nine civic organizations, making it a symbol of community spirit and cooperation. However, as time has progressed, the facility has faced challenges related to its infrastructure and operational expenses, prompting the current redevelopment plan.

The decision to demolish the aquatic center raises concerns among long-time residents who have fond memories of the pool.

“It has been a vital part of our community for decades,”

said Ed Horvat, a local historian affiliated with the Animas Museum. “Losing it will be a significant change for many families who grew up here.”

As discussions continue, community members are urged to voice their opinions about the future of the facility. Public meetings will be scheduled in the coming weeks to gather feedback and explore potential alternatives to demolition.

WHAT’S NEXT: Residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to participate in upcoming forums to discuss redevelopment plans, with a focus on ensuring that future facilities meet the evolving needs of the community. The next meeting is set for March 15, 2024, at the Durango Community Center.

This urgent update underscores the importance of community engagement in shaping the future of recreational facilities in Durango. As more developments unfold, stay tuned for the latest news on this significant local issue.
