URGENT UPDATE: Suffolk native Nathan Richardson is set to captivate audiences in Hampton next week as he brings the legendary abolitionist Frederick Douglass to life. His workshop titled, “The Art of Historical Interpretation with Nathan Richardson,” begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hampton History Museum.
This workshop is a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts and aspiring interpreters to learn from a seasoned professional. Richardson, who performs approximately 65 shows a year, will discuss what it means to be a historical interpreter—an immersive role that requires embodying the essence of figures like Douglass.
Richardson’s performances are not mere reenactments; they transform him into Douglass, allowing audiences to interact directly with history. “An interpreter literally has to become that person,” he explains. His shows often start with a reenactment of Douglass’ speeches, but the magic happens when audience members can ask questions directly to Douglass. This interactive element sets Richardson’s performances apart.
Details of the Workshop:
When: 6:30-8 p.m. Monday
Where: Hampton History Museum, 120 Old Hampton Lane
Tickets: Free for museum members, $5 for nonmembers
“Everything that I have learned over the past 13 years, I’m trying to pass it on to other people who want to do what I do,” Richardson stated.
Richardson’s journey as a historical interpreter began in 2012. He was drawn to Douglass for his powerful speeches and the eloquent prose that challenged the injustices of his time. “He set the standard for civil rights in America,” Richardson emphasized, highlighting the relevance of Douglass’ story today.
However, Richardson has observed a concerning trend: a decline in the number of individuals pursuing careers in historical interpretation. “We need new people,” he urged, calling for younger generations to engage with history and bring it to life.
As this workshop approaches, it promises to be an enriching experience for attendees, providing insights into the art of historical interpretation and the importance of preserving stories from the past. This is a chance not only to learn but to connect with the enduring legacy of Frederick Douglass.
Stay tuned as the event unfolds and seize this opportunity to engage with American history in a profound way!
