UPDATE: Jalen Williams made a triumphant return to the court, scoring 11 points and dishing out 8 assists in his first game of the season, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 123-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. This win marks the Thunder’s 11th consecutive victory and solidifies their spot in the knockout round of the NBA Cup.
Playing 29 minutes after recovering from wrist surgery, Williams contributed significantly despite a challenging start, connecting on 3 of 12 shots. His presence was crucial as the Thunder improved to an impressive 19-1 record, making them only the fifth team in NBA history to achieve this feat.
Williams underwent surgery in July 2023 to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, followed by a second procedure to remove a screw causing discomfort. “The goal for tonight was to get in a rhythm,” Williams stated. “Game 7 was, what, five months ago? Almost six. Trying to adjust to the physicality now was a little different.”
Despite missing the first 19 games of the season, the Thunder have thrived, showcasing their depth and talent. Last season, Williams emerged as a standout player, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. His accolades included making both the All-NBA and All-Defensive teams.
“It’s a process,” Williams added, discussing his adjustment. “Defensively, my feet feel fine, my wind is good. I can find ways to contribute offensively until I get my rhythm back.”
In this pivotal game, teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shone brightly, scoring a game-high 37 points, including a critical 15 points in the final seven minutes. He has now scored at least 20 points in 92 consecutive games, tying him with the legendary Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history.
However, Williams’ late start means he will not qualify for postseason honors, impacting his eligibility for a potential $287 million super maximum contract kicker in his recent extension.
As the Thunder look ahead, all eyes will be on their continued performance and Williams’ integration into the lineup. The urgency is palpable as the NBA season unfolds, and the Thunder are poised to make a deep playoff run.
