Microsoft has announced a temporary delay for the price increase of Xbox Game Pass subscriptions for existing subscribers in select regions. This decision, confirmed on October 7, 2023, affects only certain countries, while subscribers in the United States and United Kingdom will see no immediate changes to their pricing structure.
In correspondence sent to subscribers in specific areas, the tech giant clarified that the recently announced price hike will not apply to current members who are on an auto-recurring plan. New subscriptions, however, will be subject to the elevated rates. According to an email shared with subscribers, “At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside.” The company emphasized that if an existing subscriber chooses to cancel and later resubscribe, they will be charged at the new rates.
The messages circulating online indicated that this price freeze was implemented in response to regional regulations that restrict sudden rate increases. Microsoft noted that subscribers in the US and UK did not receive the notification because the hike does not impact them. As of now, users in these regions will continue to pay $30 per month for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
While the timing of this announcement may raise questions, it appears that the temporary delay is not a direct response to the backlash Microsoft has faced following its price hike announcement. Instead, it provides a grace period for subscribers in the affected regions, allowing them to maintain their current rates for the time being.
In a statement to The Verge, Microsoft confirmed, “Current subscribers in certain countries will continue renewing at their existing price for now, in line with local requirements. We’ll provide advance notice before price adjustments take effect in these countries.” Subscribers can expect to receive at least 60 days’ notice before any changes to their accounts occur, giving them the option to cancel or modify their subscription plans at any time.
In a related note, GameStop has announced that it will continue selling Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions at the existing price of $20 instead of the new rate of $30. This offer will be valid both in-store and online, providing an alternative for customers looking to avoid the price increase.
As Microsoft navigates the complexities of regional pricing and subscriber expectations, the company’s approach highlights the need for clear communication and adaptability in a competitive marketplace.
