Drivers on southbound Interstate 95 in Philadelphia should prepare for significant changes as overnight lane closures begin next week. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction will start on January 13 and continue through January 16, 2024, to initiate a long-term traffic shift associated with critical bridge repairs.
During this period, a single lane will close nightly from 21:00 to 00:00, followed by a double lane closure from 00:00 to 05:00. PennDOT expects considerable backups and delays during these overnight hours as crews work to establish a new traffic pattern on I-95 between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue. By the morning of January 17, the new traffic configuration will be in effect and will remain in place until late May 2024.
Details of the Bridge Repair Project
This construction is part of a larger $37.4 million federally funded initiative aimed at high-priority repairs to the interstate bridges. The project focuses on preserving safety, mobility, and structural integrity along one of the region’s busiest routes. Key aspects of the work involve repairing deteriorated bridge decks, steel superstructure components, and prestressed concrete beams.
In addition to structural repairs, crews will replace expansion joints and deck seals. Substructure repairs will address bearings, concrete elements, and bridge seats. The project also includes cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures, along with upgrading roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.
Community Impact and Traffic Management
IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, New Jersey, is the general contractor for this extensive project. With the overnight closures leading to sustained traffic shifts, motorists are advised to plan accordingly and remain informed as conditions evolve.
