BREAKING NEWS: Merle Eugene Johnson, aged 89, of Nashua, passed away on December 14, 2025, at St. Luke’s Helen G. Nassif Transitional Care Center in Cedar Rapids. His death marks the loss of a cherished community member known for his unwavering dedication to family and friends.
The funeral services are scheduled for noon on January 2, 2026, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory/Olson Chapel in Nashua, with Pastor Todd Burrichter officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather an hour prior to the service to pay their respects.
Merle Johnson’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and a commitment to family. He was born on March 21, 1936, in Sterling, Illinois, and his life was defined by simple joys and hard work. He met his beloved wife, Glenda Henson, in a chance encounter at a roller-skating rink, leading to a marriage that lasted more than six decades.
As a proud veteran, Merle served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Princeton for four years. His career later flourished at Morton Buildings, where he dedicated 40 years as a supervisor, exemplifying commitment and pride in his work.
Merle was not only a devoted husband but also a passionate father and grandfather. He found joy in cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events and making them special treats. An avid fan of the Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings, he enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing and snowmobiling, illustrating his zest for life.
His meticulous nature was evident in his organized and spotless environment, reflecting the pride he took in every aspect of his life. Known for his resourcefulness, Merle could fix or create almost anything, showcasing his adventurous spirit.
“He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved him,” shared family members.
Merle is survived by his son, Steve Johnson of Center Point, daughters Andrea Harrington of Seal Beach, California, and Kim Lefebvre of North Bay, Ontario, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenda, and several family members.
