UPDATE: A suspected drunken driver has been arrested following a chaotic series of crashes in Vista, California, that injured multiple bystanders on the evening of October 23, 2023. Authorities confirm the 32-year-old man is facing 19 charges, including suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run causing injury.
The reckless spree began around 7:30 PM, when the driver collided with a parked car and a steel gate at an apartment complex on Oak Drive near Foothill Drive. Lt. Noah Zarnow from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office reported that the suspect continued his dangerous path, crashing into two additional parked vehicles, a fire hydrant, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the pickup truck swerved dangerously, sideswiping another vehicle and forcing oncoming drivers to take evasive action. The situation escalated when the suspect attempted to pass cars over double yellow lines, leading to a head-on collision.
“In an attempt to flee this scene, the driver reversed and then accelerated forward, ramming the victim’s vehicle to push it out of the way,” Lt. Zarnow stated. The victim sustained injuries and required treatment by emergency paramedics at the scene.
Despite losing a front tire and suffering extensive damage, the truck continued its reckless journey, crashing into an oncoming minivan, which resulted in significant damage and left its driver with minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that the pickup finally veered off the road and struck a power pole in a neighborhood near Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, where deputies promptly apprehended the suspect.
Law enforcement is urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as they continue their investigation.
