A new device designed to enhance the functionality of Presta valves has been introduced by Dutch company BBB Cycling. Known as the CoreCap, this innovative product aims to address common drawbacks associated with Presta valves, which are standard on many high-end bicycles.
Presta valves are preferred for their ability to maintain higher air pressure and their lighter, narrower profile compared to Schrader valves. The narrower size allows for smaller holes to be drilled in bike rims, which helps maintain the integrity of narrow road bike designs. Additionally, the removable cores of Presta valves facilitate the injection of sealant into tubeless tires. However, these cores are often fragile, prone to bending or breaking, and can become clogged with sealant. Another significant issue is that they require a specialized pump head or adapter, limiting cyclists’ ability to inflate tires in various situations, such as at a gas station.
CoreCap Enhancements
The CoreCap resolves these issues effectively. To utilize the Upgrade Set version, cyclists simply need to remove the core from their existing Presta valve (which must have a removable core) and attach the machined aluminum CoreCap. This modification allows the valve to be used with a standard Schrader pump head, eliminating the need for specialized equipment. The CoreCap remains in place permanently, enhancing the original valve’s functionality.
According to BBB Cycling, using the CoreCap can increase airflow by an impressive 300%. This improvement not only retains the advantages of the Presta valve but also diminishes the fragility and complications associated with its core. Furthermore, the increased airflow is claimed to facilitate the seating of tubeless tires without the need for a compressor or CO2 cartridge.
Pricing and Availability
The CoreCap is available in two versions. The fully-integrated Tubeless Valve Set starts at €29.95 (approximately US$35), while the Upgrade Set, which includes two CoreCaps, is priced at €16.95 (about US$20).
For cyclists seeking alternatives, the Clik Valve from Schwalbe may also be worth considering, although it requires its own specific pump head. The CoreCap represents a significant advancement for Presta valve users, aiming to enhance the cycling experience by addressing long-standing limitations.
This development has been reported by BikeRadar, highlighting the growing innovation in cycling accessories to better meet cyclists’ needs.
