BREAKING: An auction of items from the legendary Willie Mays’ personal collection has just generated an astonishing $6,569,958 over two days, benefitting the Say Hey! Foundation. Conducted by Hunt Auctions, the live and online auction took place on September 28-29, 2023, showcasing 944 lots of memorabilia that celebrates Mays’ iconic career.
This auction is monumental, as all proceeds will directly support educational and health services for youth, fulfilling Mays’ vision since founding the Say Hey! Foundation in 2000. “Per Mays’ wishes, all proceeds from this auction will go to delivering education, training, and health services for youth,” Hunt Auctions emphasized.
Among the standout items sold were Mays’ prestigious awards from his legendary 1954 season. The MVP award fetched an impressive $458,250, while his Silver Slugger award sold for $246,750. Additionally, his World Series ring, a symbol of his triumphs, also reached $458,250.
A highlight of the auction was Mays’ home uniform from the 1962 season, worn during the All-Star Game and potentially the World Series, which sold for a remarkable $634,500. Other notable sales included Mays’ 1977 custom Stutz Blackhawk VI, which went for $45,237.50, and his Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by President Barack Obama in 2015, which garnered a winning bid of $64,625.
Hunt Auctions has announced plans for another offering from Mays’ collection at the end of 2025, predicting that this future auction could also reach “an additional seven figures.”
