URGENT UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed to help pack 12,500 backpacks for Kent County students as part of the Big Backpack Build initiative. Organizers from the local nonprofit Storehouse of Community Resources are calling on the community to join them on Tuesday, August 12, 2024, at DeVos Place from 9 a.m. to noon to support students heading back to school.
This critical event will ensure thousands of students start the school year equipped with essential supplies such as notebooks, pencils, and books. Volunteer opportunities are open to individuals aged 18 and over, as well as families with older children and corporate groups.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to stand for the duration of the event. Light snacks will be provided to keep volunteers energized. In addition to packing the backpacks, there are opportunities to assist in distributing them to elementary students at the In The Image SHOES 2025 program from August 13-15. Every new pair of shoes purchased will come with a free backpack filled with supplies.
Kate Veldman, KSSN coordinator at Pinewood Middle School, expressed gratitude for community support. “Last year’s event saw over 150 volunteers come together to pack more than 10,000 backpacks, making a significant impact on our students,” she stated.
The remaining backpacks will be distributed throughout Kent County by the Kent School Services Network and their coordinators. Donations are also welcomed online to help fund the backpacks and supplies, further amplifying the community’s impact on local students.
Don’t miss this chance to contribute to the education and success of Kent County’s youth. Sign up now to make a difference in your community and share this urgent call for volunteers to inspire others to join!
