UPDATE: In a stunning display of power, Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber launched four home runs in a single game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night, pushing his season total to an impressive 49 homers. This milestone marks Schwarber as the fourth Phillies player to achieve this feat and the first since Mike Schmidt did so in April 1976.
The game, played at Citizens Bank Park, saw Schwarber make history as he became the 21st player in Major League Baseball history to hit four homers in one contest. He is now the third player to do so this season, following Eugenio Suárez and Nick Kurtz.
Schwarber’s performance was nothing short of electric. He began the night with a solo homer off pitcher Cal Quantrill, sending a curveball deep into the right-field stands. Following a flyout in the second inning, he struck again in the fourth inning, hitting a two-run shot against lefty Austin Cox. The crowd erupted in chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P!” as Schwarber continued his power surge, launching a three-run drive for a total of five RBIs, putting the Phillies ahead 15-3.
In the eighth inning, Schwarber capped off his record-breaking night with a three-run homer off Wander Suero, bringing the scoreboard to 18-4 in favor of the Phillies. His nine RBIs set a franchise record, surpassing the previous record held by Ryan Howard.
With this performance, Schwarber also moved past Howard’s 2008 total and Schmidt’s 1980 total, now holding the second-most homers in a season in Phillies history, just behind Ryan Howard’s 58 homers from 2006.
Schwarber, who started the day tied with the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani for the National League lead, is now just one home run behind Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 50 homers.
As fans continue to celebrate this historic achievement, all eyes will be on Schwarber as he aims to chase down the league leaders and further etch his name in the record books. The Philadelphia Phillies are riding high on this victory, and Schwarber’s unprecedented power at the plate could play a crucial role as they push towards the postseason.
