Burnout Survivor Thrives in Vietnam After Quitting Corporate Job

UPDATE: A former corporate consultant, Susan Lindgren, has transformed her life after leaving the high-pressure world of corporate America. Ten years ago, she quit her job due to severe burnout and stress-related health issues, leading her on a remarkable journey to discover true freedom abroad.

Lindgren, now 58 years old and residing in Da Nang, Vietnam, shares her inspiring story of recovery and renewal. Initially planning a brief one-year hiatus to focus on her health and family, she found herself captivated by the joy of travel and the vibrant culture of Vietnam.

In her previous role as a business software consultant, Lindgren juggled multiple clients, leaving her personal life in shambles. “I always felt like my plans were a ‘maybe,'” she recalls. This relentless pressure led to alarming health issues, including elevated blood pressure and an abnormally rapid heart rate. After a wake-up call from her psychologist, Lindgren made a life-changing decision: to prioritize her health and happiness.

The pivotal moment came during a volunteer trip to Tanzania, where she experienced profound happiness. Inspired by a conversation with a fellow traveler, she decided to embrace the nomadic lifestyle. “I returned to the US, rented out my condo, and began traveling across Africa, South America, and Asia,” she explained.

Lindgren first visited Vietnam in 2017 and returned in 2020, when the pandemic forced her to stay for five months. Enchanted by the country’s beaches, nature, and fresh cuisine, she ultimately chose to make Da Nang her home. “I’ve been living here for a year and a half, and it’s very easy to meet new people,” she shared.

The lifestyle change has significantly improved her health and overall well-being. “I quit eating supplements and have never felt better,” she states. Lindgren now participates in acroyoga, salsa dancing, and hiking, feeling energetic and revitalized.

In contrast to her life in the States, where material possessions dictated success, she finds peace in a community that values personality and presence. “Back home, people ask about your house, your car, your job. Here, it’s refreshing,” she said.

Lindgren has discovered a new definition of wealth. “Waking up, going to the beach, and drinking a fresh coconut feels like real wealth to me,” she emphasizes. With rental income from her condo and investments, she enjoys the freedom to choose her lifestyle and travel when she wishes.

As she reflects on her journey, Lindgren encourages others to consider the possibilities of a life less constrained by conventional expectations. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing health and happiness.

This inspiring transformation not only highlights the potential for personal growth after burnout but also underscores the allure of living abroad. As more people seek alternatives to traditional work-life balance, Lindgren’s experience resonates widely.

For those considering a similar path, Lindgren’s journey offers hope and motivation. “Travel has opened my mind to a new way of living,” she concludes.

Stay tuned for more stories of transformation and resilience as individuals around the world redefine their lives in pursuit of happiness and health.
