Amari Bailey’s NCAA Return: Official Visit to GCU Set for Wednesday

BREAKING: Former UCLA star Amari Bailey is taking a bold step toward a potential return to college basketball, as he has scheduled an official recruiting visit to Grand Canyon University (GCU) this Wednesday, January 30, 2023. After being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 2023 and appearing in just 10 NBA games, Bailey aims to become the first player to transition back to college basketball after competing in the NBA.

Sources reveal that GCU is making a strong pitch to Bailey, showcasing its vision for the program during his visit. He will attend the game against New Mexico and meet with the coaching staff, marking a significant moment in his bid to return for the 2026-27 NCAA season.

However, Bailey’s path to eligibility remains complicated. The NCAA has stated that Bailey will not be granted eligibility due to his NBA contract and previous games played. He acknowledges the challenge, stating to ESPN that his goal is “not a stunt.”

“I’m really serious about going back,” Bailey emphasized. “I just want to improve my game, change the perception of me, and just show that I can win.”

While his visit to GCU is essential, it does not impact the ongoing battle for his eligibility. Bailey might have to explore legal avenues similar to that of Alabama’s Charles Bediako, who recently received a temporary restraining order from a state court to challenge his own eligibility after signing a two-way NBA deal. Bediako’s injunction hearing is scheduled for this Friday, setting a precedent for Bailey’s potential legal actions.

GCU is currently experiencing a promising season in the Mountain West, holding a record of 15-7 and 8-3 in league play, having reached the NCAA tournament four times in the last five years under head coach Bryce Drew. Bailey’s interest in GCU underscores the aggressive pursuit of top talent by colleges, eager to leverage any opportunity to enhance their rosters.

Other schools are also reportedly vying for Bailey’s attention, indicating that his return to college basketball could ignite significant interest across the NCAA landscape.

As developments unfold, all eyes will be on Bailey’s next moves and the potential legal strategies that could redefine the eligibility rules for players seeking to transition back to college athletics. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story.
