Utah Utes Overwhelm Nebraska Cornhuskers 44-22 in Las Vegas Bowl

On December 31, 2025, the Utah Utes delivered a convincing performance against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, winning the Las Vegas Bowl 44-22. After a competitive first quarter where Nebraska led 14-7, Utah dominated the remainder of the game, scoring 37 unanswered points. This marked a significant contrast in the seasons of both teams, as Nebraska ended the year with a record of 7-6 for the second consecutive time, while Utah improved to 11-2.

Nebraska initially appeared formidable, outgaining Utah 157-102 in the opening quarter. Yet, the Cornhuskers quickly fell into a familiar pattern of struggle, managing only five yards over their next six possessions. In stark contrast, Utah capitalized on their opportunities, amassing 31 points and 324 yards in their subsequent five drives. Although Nebraska’s defense managed to limit Utah’s rushing game—keeping them 45 yards below their average of 270 yards per game—their passing defense faltered significantly, allowing 310 yards, which exceeded their average by 169 yards.

The absence of key players such as All-American running back Emmett Johnson and second-leading tackler Deshon Singleton undoubtedly impacted Nebraska’s performance. Despite these challenges, the game served as a stark reminder of the gap between the two programs. Nebraska’s struggles raise concerns about whether the team is making progress or simply maintaining a level of mediocrity that has persisted for over two decades.

The season began with optimism for Nebraska, including hopes of winning 7-8 games and competing for conference titles. However, a disheartening finish, where they were outscored 121-48 across their last three games, has left fans questioning the direction of the program. Coach Matt Rhule faces mounting pressure as the offseason approaches, with many wondering if he can effectively steer the team back to relevance.

As the game unfolded, it became evident that this bowl matchup resembled more of a glorified spring game than a competitive postseason contest. With a roster comprised of 72% freshmen and sophomores, the game provided a critical opportunity for coaches to assess talent and identify areas needing improvement. Rhule has already begun to make changes, dismissing both offensive and defensive line coaches, as well as the defensive coordinator.

Newly appointed offensive line coach Geep Wade has reportedly made a positive impact on the personnel, but the team remains in need of additional talent, particularly in the transfer portal. The new defensive coordinator, Rob Aurich, observed the game from the sidelines, likely pondering how to address the deficiencies exposed during the matchup.

On the offensive side, running back Mekhi Nelson stood out with 12 carries for 88 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown run. Quarterback TJ Lateef completed 15 of 28 passes for 182 yards but struggled with his performance, throwing an interception and only managing 22 rushing yards after accounting for three sacks. The need for a more reliable quarterback in the upcoming transfer portal period is apparent.

While the Nebraska defense faced criticism, redshirt freshman safety Caleb Benning earned recognition for leading the defense with 13 tackles—more than doubling his career total prior to the game. The offense had some promising moments early but ultimately faded, leaving fans with little to celebrate.

Despite the disappointing outcome, one silver lining for Nebraska is their positive turnover margin of +2 for the season, the first time they have achieved this since 2016. As college football continues to evolve, with the transfer portal playing an increasingly pivotal role, teams have the potential to rebound quickly.

For instance, Utah improved from a 5-7 record in 2024 to 11-2 in 2025, largely due to the addition of 14 players from the transfer portal, including quarterback Devon Dampier, who had a standout performance in the bowl game.

As Nebraska heads into the offseason, the urgency to revamp the program is palpable. Fans are hopeful that with a budget of approximately $30-$40 million for name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities, the team can attract the talent necessary to forge a path back to competitiveness.

The coming weeks will be critical as the transfer portal opens, and Nebraska fans are left wondering what changes will unfold. As the offseason begins, the hope remains that the team will soon return to form. The road ahead may be challenging, but the potential for improvement is undeniably there.
