Camilla Läckberg, recognized as the “Queen of Swedish Noir,” continues to expand her reach in the entertainment industry with the debut of her series, Camilla Läckberg’s Erica, now available for streaming in North America. This six-episode adaptation, acquired exclusively by MHz Choice, is based on her acclaimed Swedish crime novels and represents the first French-language adaptation of her work.
The series features compelling narratives derived from three novels in Läckberg’s popular Fjällbacka series: The Ice Princess, The Preacher, and The Stonecutter. It portrays Erica, a successful crime writer, who returns to her hometown only to discover her friend, Alexandra, dead. While others see it as a suicide, Erica suspects foul play and embarks on her own investigation.
Global Reach and Adaptations
Läckberg’s works have sold over 35 million copies across more than 60 countries. Her stories resonate internationally, prompting adaptations beyond Sweden. In addition to the French series, an Italian version is currently in development, which Läckberg recently visited. She expressed excitement about this project, noting that while it will carry a distinctly Italian flavor, the essence of her original stories remains intact.
When asked about the transition of her characters to different cultures, Läckberg welcomed the idea. “I loved the idea of Erica going French,” she shared. “Of course, changes have to be made… but I still recognize my characters and stories very well.”
Future Projects and Passion for Storytelling
Läckberg’s engagement in television and film has become a significant part of her career. She stated, “Working with TV and film has become a passion, sprung out of my decades-long passion for writing books.” Currently, she is involved in multiple film and television projects, although specific details remain under wraps.
While she continues to write novels, Läckberg also explores original storylines for series. “I just simply love storytelling, in any shape or form,” she noted. Her hands-on approach ensures that the integrity of her narratives is maintained throughout the adaptation process.
Läckberg co-owns two production companies, Creative Society and Bad Flamingo Studios, the latter of which is working on a film titled The Dog, set in Kenya. This film has garnered several nominations and awards at international film festivals, highlighting Läckberg’s growing influence in the industry.
In addition to her literary and screenwriting endeavors, Läckberg has participated in various television shows in Sweden, including a stint on the Swedish version of Dancing With the Stars in 2012. Reflecting on that experience, she shared, “Doing Dancing With the Stars is still one of the most fun things I have ever done.”
Läckberg harbors aspirations of creating a project that captures Hollywood’s attention, stating, “My biggest dream, however, is to write something for TV or film that gets done in America.”
As she looks to the future, Läckberg remains enthusiastic about expanding her creative portfolio. She also revealed that her children’s book series, Super-Charlie, has been adapted into an animated movie, which premiered in cinemas and was sold to over 50 countries.
With plans for new projects and the continued adaptation of her work for international audiences, Läckberg’s ambition to conquer America appears within reach. She anticipates significant developments in 2026, solidifying her position as a dynamic figure in the world of literature and screenwriting.
