UPDATE: In a stunning display of talent, Niina Petrokina has taken the lead in the short program at the European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield, England, just ahead of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
Petrokina, returning from Achilles tendon surgery in October, wowed the audience with a flawless performance that included a challenging triple lutz-triple toeloop combination. The Estonian skater scored a remarkable 70.61 points, surpassing her previous personal best and leaving her competitors in the dust.
Currently in second place is Nina Pinzarrone from Belgium, who has consistently performed well in the past two years, scoring 64.97 points. Close behind, Anna Pezzetta of Italy secured third place with 64.85 points. Last year’s champion, Loena Hendrickx, managed to claim fifth place despite a fall, reflecting her challenging season.
The stakes are high as the competition unfolds, with the pairs’ free skate scheduled for Thursday and the women’s free skate set for Friday. This championship is critical not only for the athletes’ standings but also as a final test before the Olympics.
In the pairs event, Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava from Georgia are leading with a score of 75.96 points, just ahead of the defending champions, Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany, who scored 74.81 points. The duo of Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko from Hungary is in third place with 73.32 points.
It is noteworthy that all of the top three pairs skaters except Hase were born in Russia and now represent other nations, as Russian athletes are currently competing under neutral status due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
As the excitement builds, fans are eagerly awaiting how the remainder of the championships will unfold. With Petrokina poised for a strong Olympic showing, the world will be watching closely.
Stay tuned for more updates as the competition progresses and key performances continue to shape the path to the Winter Olympics.
