UPDATE: A devastating fire broke out at the historic Custom House Wharf in Portland, Maine, on Friday evening, leading to the destruction of one building and damaging several others. The blaze ignited around 5 p.m. and was brought under control by approximately 7:22 p.m., but not before firefighters faced significant challenges, including rescuing individuals from sinking boats.
Local authorities report that eight people were rescued as flames engulfed the area, prompting an immediate response from the Portland Fire Department. “Unfortunately, it looked like the fire had a pretty good head start on us when we got down here, but the first companies did a great job,” stated Deputy Fire Chief Jon Hendricks. “They made a really aggressive attack to keep it from spreading down the rest of the wharf,” he added, highlighting the swift action taken by responders.
The Porthole Restaurant and Pub, a beloved establishment on the wharf, confirmed it survived the incident and remains open. “Our hearts are with everyone impacted by last night’s fire at Custom House Wharf. We’re grateful for the first responders and for the safety of our neighbors,” the restaurant posted on social media.
The fire’s cause is currently under investigation as local officials, including Maine Governor Janet Mills, are monitoring the situation closely. Mills took to social media to urge the public to avoid the area and follow guidance from safety officials. “I am aware of the fire on the Portland waterfront and my administration is monitoring the situation,” she wrote.
Witnesses reported a rapid spread of flames and smoke through the aging structures, which are part of Portland’s historic waterfront and once served as a hub for the commercial fishing industry. The area now features a mix of dining and shopping experiences, attracting both locals and tourists.
According to reports, one boat sank during the incident, and several others were damaged. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with older waterfront structures, which have weathered years of maritime use.
As authorities continue their investigation, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about updates. The community is rallying around those affected, with businesses like the Porthole leading the charge in providing support.
Stay tuned for further developments as officials work to determine the full impact of this significant fire on Portland’s historic waterfront.
