UPDATE: A 15-year-old Long Island teen has been indicted for attempted murder following a shocking shooting incident that left two victims injured at a Central Islip apartment complex pool. The indictment was confirmed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.
The violent confrontation erupted on June 19, 2023, around 4:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Living apartment complex, a luxury community in Islip. During a fight between two groups of teenagers, the suspect allegedly fired at least 10 rounds from a firearm he retrieved from his backpack. Authorities report that seven shots struck his intended target, a 16-year-old male, while a 25-year-old woman who was accompanying him was also hit.
Both victims were rushed to local hospitals in serious condition. The young male was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, while the female victim was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. Investigators found 10 spent shell casings at the scene, along with bullet fragments that caused property damage, including one that penetrated a nearby apartment.
After fleeing the scene, the suspect was arrested on August 14, 2023, in Amityville, approximately 13 miles from the shooting location. He was arraigned on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted on the top count, he faces up to 10 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 21, 2023.
“This violence has no place in our community,” stated Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “My office will do everything in its power to seek swift justice for the victims.”
This urgent case highlights the ongoing concerns over youth violence and gun accessibility in communities. The community is left reeling as they await further developments in this troubling incident.
