UPDATE: Giving Tuesday 2025 is here, and momentum is building as millions prepare to donate to their favorite charities today, December 2, 2025. Following the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this day serves as a powerful reminder to give back, and experts predict that donations could exceed last year’s impressive total of $3.1 billion from approximately 34 million participants.
The concept of Giving Tuesday, first introduced in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York and the United Nations Foundation, aims to shift the focus from shopping to philanthropy. With the surge in online sales and holiday spending, many feel the need to contribute to something greater than themselves.
“Today is not just about donations; it’s a day for everyone to reflect on how they can give back,” said Asha Curran, CEO of Giving Tuesday. “We encourage people to think about their impact and find ways to make a difference.”
Last year, the donations on Giving Tuesday reached a record high, showcasing a growing trend toward charitable giving. In its inception, Giving Tuesday raised an estimated $10 million, which skyrocketed to $3.1 billion in 2023, marking a significant increase in awareness and participation in charitable activities.
The movement has expanded globally, now reaching over 80 countries, including nations where Black Friday and Cyber Monday do not exist. Curran noted, “Giving Tuesday exists in places around the world that remind us of our shared values.”
However, while the excitement builds around the donations, it’s crucial to recognize that Giving Tuesday represents more than just financial contributions. “Most people participate in making the world a better place in multiple ways: through donations, volunteering, and sharing information about impactful organizations,” said Curran.
Experts argue that even though donations on Giving Tuesday are a small fraction of total charitable giving in the U.S., which amounted to $592.5 billion in 2024, every contribution counts. “It doesn’t take millions of dollars to save a life; even a few thousand can make a significant difference,” Curran added.
As you prepare to take part in this global day of giving, consider your options carefully. There are numerous resources available to help you determine the most effective ways to donate, including platforms that evaluate charities for their impact.
Today is a powerful opportunity not just to donate but to engage in meaningful conversations about how we can collectively improve our communities and the world. The urgency to act is clear: the time to give is NOW.
Join the movement, share your stories, and inspire others to take part in this vital day of giving.
