URGENT UPDATE: Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are being celebrated for their swift and courageous rescue of two paragliders who crashed into the ocean off Carbon Beach, Malibu, today around 12:30 p.m.
The dramatic incident unfolded when a man and woman became ensnared in their parachute cords after crashing into the choppy waters. The weight of their equipment was dragging them down, leading to a life-threatening situation.
Responding to the emergency call, Deputies Christopher Matkin and Sevak Grigoryan sprang into action without hesitation. Body camera footage reveals the deputies racing to the shoreline, shedding their gear as they dashed into the surf to assist the distressed paragliders.
“When we first got there, the fog was very dense. We could only make out the outline of the parachute,” Matkin recounted in a statement to reporters. “Once we got closer to the water’s edge, we were able to see the two victims in the water.”
Upon reaching the paragliders, the deputies quickly deployed their knives to cut the tangled cords, freeing the individuals from their precarious situation. After ensuring their safety, the deputies guided them back to the beach, where they received medical attention.
Fortunately, the paragliders did not sustain serious injuries and were treated on-site, showcasing the effective response and bravery of the deputies involved.
This heroic rescue highlights the dedication and courage of law enforcement personnel who put their lives on the line to protect others. With emergency services responding so rapidly, this incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with paragliding, especially in challenging weather conditions.
As of now, there are no further updates on the condition of the rescued paragliders. Authorities advise caution for those engaging in water sports in unpredictable weather.
