UPDATE: Colton Maita, the talented athlete from Neuqua Valley, has made a stunning comeback by switching positions and excelling as a cornerback in a thrilling 21-13 victory against rival Waubonsie Valley on September 15, 2023. After enduring multiple injuries, including serious back fractures, Maita’s determination to contribute is turning heads.
This season was meant to be Maita’s breakout year as the starting quarterback. However, a devastating injury sustained during baseball season derailed those plans, forcing him to miss the entire 2024 football season. “It was a tough season last year for everyone, especially me just being on the sidelines,” Maita stated, reflecting on his challenges.
Despite the setbacks, Neuqua Valley coach Bill Ellinghaus recognized Maita’s talent and offered him a vital role on the defense. “He’s too good of an athlete to keep off the field,” Ellinghaus emphasized, leading to Maita’s transition to cornerback.
The decision proved fruitful. Maita’s defensive debut included two crucial interceptions, showcasing his quick adaptation to the new position. Junior linebacker Pierce Stevens praised Maita’s resilience, stating, “He was going to play quarterback, and then he got moved to corner, but he didn’t let that stop him.”
Maita’s first interception set the stage for a 16-yard touchdown run by senior running back Andrew Barkley, giving the Wildcats an early lead. Barkley, who rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, expressed his excitement: “Boy, am I glad he switched to defense. Those interceptions just set us up for perfect opportunities to score.”
As the game progressed, Maita’s performance continued to impress, culminating in a sack and a near interception in the final moments of the match. Maita’s understanding of the game, stemming from his quarterback experience, has allowed him to excel on defense. “He understands what the quarterback is trying to do, so he always puts himself in a good spot,” Ellinghaus noted.
Despite the success in his new role, Maita hasn’t abandoned his quarterback aspirations. “I still take some reps at quarterback in practice. In case anything ever happens, I’ll be ready to go,” he revealed. This dual capability highlights Maita’s versatility and readiness to step up wherever needed.
Maita’s journey back to the field is a testament to his resilience and team spirit. He credited his teammates for their support during his recovery, saying, “The leaders on the team took me under their wing, and the coaches got us prepared.”
As Neuqua Valley aims to build on this win, Maita’s story serves as an inspiration. His ability to adapt, overcome adversity, and prioritize team needs is a powerful reminder of the spirit of high school sports. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see what Maita will accomplish next as the season unfolds.
