UPDATE: Carson Melendy, a standout wrestler from Fallon, just secured a remarkable second place finish at the Sierra Nevada Classic held in Reno, Nevada. The two-day tournament concluded on Tuesday, showcasing Melendy’s resilience as he continues to prove himself as a top competitor in the region.
Melendy’s performance at the 165-pound weight class was pivotal, contributing to Fallon’s overall finish of 19th out of 92 teams. This impressive result comes as the Greenwave team is still finding its footing in the midseason. Just days later, Melendy continued his strong showing by finishing second once again at the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable wrestler.
The championship match at the Sierra Nevada Classic marked Melendy’s first defeat of the season, coming after he had to forgo participation in the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Lovelock Invitational due to illness. He battled fiercely, achieving a record of 5-1 with three pins and a technical fall before falling to Sebastian Garcia from Junipero Serra in the finals.
Melendy’s grit and determination are particularly noteworthy as he aims for his fourth state title in his final season. His performance at both tournaments has captured attention and inspired his teammates. At the Rollie Lane Invitational, Melendy reached the finals through a series of decisive match victories, ultimately losing a nail-biter 9-8 in the championship match.
Fallon’s roster saw other athletes shine as well. Wyatt Lambert, competing at 157 pounds, finished 3-2 at the Sierra Nevada Classic, while Manuel Barros also went 3-2 at 113 pounds. Several wrestlers, including Braylon Byrd and Andre Green, showcased strong performances despite facing tough competition.
Looking ahead, the Greenwave will host a dual against Fernley on Wednesday. They will then compete in the Steave Deaton Memorial in Minden this weekend, where more opportunities for success await.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Wave had a challenging outing at the Sierra Nevada Classic but rebounded at the Sparks Invitational. Peyton Heckman emerged victorious in her weight class, finishing 2-1 at 145 pounds, while teammates Saraphine Luna and Tabitha Brockelsby secured second-place finishes in their respective categories. This demonstrates the growing strength and competitiveness of the Lady Wave wrestling program.
The excitement surrounding Melendy and the Greenwave wrestling team is palpable as they strive for excellence in their upcoming matches. Stay tuned for further updates and results as they continue their season.
