The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) volleyball team will honor the late John Haefeli before their season opener against the University of Washington on August 29, 2025. The match is set for 18:00 at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colorado. Haefeli, who passed away on May 31 at the age of 67 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, was a significant supporter of the university and its athletic programs.
Haefeli was not only a beloved teacher in the Greeley-Evans School District but also an influential figure in Colorado sports as a coach, official, and administrator. He earned a master’s degree from UNC in 1986 and served as an adjunct faculty member in teacher education. His contributions to the university included volunteering as a coach for the UNC baseball team.
Delia Haefeli, John’s widow and also a UNC graduate, will perform the ceremonial first serve during the match. Head coach Lyndsey Oates, who has known the Haefelis since her high school days, extended the invitation for this tribute. Oates has expressed her desire to honor Haefeli, stating, “We want to still pay tribute to him,” reflecting on the impact he had on the community.
Haefeli was a dedicated season ticket holder for the volleyball team and participated in a committee initiated by Oates to enhance ticket sales and fundraising efforts. “He was a warrior until the end,” Oates remarked, noting Haefeli’s commitment to the community and the program.
The day he passed away, Haefeli attended the Class 3A state championship baseball game at Butch Butler Field in Greeley, where the event was named in his honor. He even threw out the first pitch before the championship match between University High and Coal Ridge.
In honor of his legacy, the Haefelis established the Delia and John W. Haefeli Opportunity Fund through The Success Foundation, aimed at reducing financial barriers for students in District 6. This initiative focuses on providing resources for internet access, academic course fees, and extracurricular activities. Oates emphasized the significance of this fund, noting that it helps local children attend UNC matches, thereby exposing them to collegiate sports.
Haefeli delivered an inspirational message to the UNC volleyball team earlier this spring, emphasizing the importance of making the most of one’s life. Oates noted that his words continue to resonate within the team, influencing their mindset and approach.
The match against Washington is just the beginning of a weekend filled with volleyball action, as UNC will also face Colgate at 18:00 on August 30. The tournament provides an opportunity for the team to showcase their talent and honor a man who made a lasting impact on their community and program.
Tickets for the matches are available at tickets.unco.edu, allowing fans to support the team while commemorating the legacy of John Haefeli.
