The Miami Dolphins have made a significant move by signing former North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller from the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. This acquisition marks the Dolphins’ second quarterback change in just four weeks, further reshaping their roster as they prepare for the upcoming games. Miller, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, joins the Dolphins’ 53-man roster, although a corresponding roster change has not yet been announced.
Miller’s performance at North Dakota State earned praise from Dolphins’ offensive coordinator Frank Smith, who highlighted the quarterback’s strong anticipation, toughness, and understanding of the game. “He had really good timing and rhythm,” Smith noted, adding that Miller was a player the team had their eye on during the draft process. Despite his addition, Miller is not expected to be active for the Dolphins’ game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Quinn Ewers will continue as the starter, with Zach Wilson serving as the backup.
The decision to bring Miller into the Dolphins’ organization aligns with the team’s long-term strategy. Smith emphasized that the goal was to integrate Miller into the team’s system for future development. Notably, Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders, endorsed Miller prior to the draft, commending his throwing technique and overall potential.
During his college career at North Dakota State from 2021 to 2024, Miller posted impressive statistics, throwing for 81 touchdowns and only 19 interceptions, while completing 69.3% of his passes. He also accumulated 2,277 rushing yards at an average of 4.3 yards per carry. In his final season, Miller led his team to a remarkable record, starting all 16 games and achieving a completion rate of 73.5% on 258 of 351 pass attempts, totaling 3,251 passing yards alongside 33 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions.
Miller’s accolades include being named a first-team All-American in 2024 and winning the MVP award in the FCS championship game, solidifying his legacy at North Dakota State. His performance set new program records for most completions and passing yards in a single season, surpassing the previous mark held by Carson Wentz.
NFL analyst Lance Zierlein provided insights on Miller’s abilities during the 2024 draft evaluation. He noted that while Miller possesses a commendable touchdown-to-interception ratio and can quickly execute his throwing motions, he may struggle with decision-making under pressure. Zierlein highlighted Miller’s mobility and ability to extend plays but cautioned that he may need to improve his efficiency in progressing through passing options.
As the Dolphins integrate Cam Miller into their quarterback room, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how this young talent develops within the franchise’s system and what impact he may have on future games.
