The Milwaukee Bucks made headlines this offseason not only with the acquisition of Myles Turner but also by adding guard Cole Anthony, who signed a one-year deal with the team in July 2023 after being bought out by the Memphis Grizzlies. Anthony enters his sixth NBA season, having previously spent five years with the Orlando Magic. Throughout his career, he has averaged 12.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game.
In the recent training camp press conferences, Anthony shared insights on his transition to Milwaukee, reflecting on the uncertainties he faced following his trade from the Magic. The move, which involved sending Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and several draft picks to Orlando for Desmond Bane, ultimately led to Anthony’s buyout with Memphis. He expressed enthusiasm about joining a team with championship aspirations and a chance to play alongside stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Anthony’s Journey and Family Legacy
During the press conference, Anthony mentioned the significance of wearing the same number, No. 50, as his father, Greg Anthony, who also played for the Bucks. Reflecting on his offseason, he stated, “I was enjoying my offseason when I heard the news of my move. I’m not looking for payback after leaving Orlando; I’m happy about this fresh start.”
Anthony described the period of uncertainty leading up to his signing with the Bucks. He noted, “It was a lot of uncertainty. I got traded to Memphis, didn’t know if I was going to be there, ended up staying there. And then I got the opportunity to sign here in Milwaukee, and I was like ‘I’m with Giannis, this sounds like a good opportunity.’”
In his five years with the Magic, the team struggled in the playoffs, failing to win a series. They made the postseason in the last two years but were eliminated in the first round. In contrast, the Bucks have consistently qualified for the playoffs, not missing since the 2015-16 season, but have faced their own challenges, losing in the first round in each of the past three seasons since their championship win in 2021.
A New Role with Championship Aspirations
With a roster filled with talented players, Anthony’s role within the Bucks remains to be seen. Head coach Doc Rivers indicated plans to utilize Anthony in various capacities, aiming for a fast-paced style of play. The addition of Turner, known for his ability to shoot from outside, complements Anthony’s skills as a driver and efficient passer.
Anthony spoke highly of the Bucks’ potential, stating, “Looking at this team, it’s a talented team. We’ve got some young players, and obviously, you’ve got big Giannis, who’s the best player in the world. This is a team with championship pedigree. They’ve done it, and I think they could do it again.” He emphasized his desire to contribute to a team that is in contention for a championship, contrasting it with his earlier experiences in Orlando.
As the Bucks prepare for the upcoming season, Anthony’s presence adds depth to the backcourt, and his enthusiasm for the game is palpable. “I like to play fast,” he remarked, noting how the team’s style aligns with his strengths. He expressed confidence that the Bucks can leverage their talents effectively, particularly in transition, making them a formidable opponent in the league.
With training camp underway, the Bucks are focused on building momentum and aiming for a successful season. Cole Anthony’s fresh perspective and skills could play a crucial role in their pursuit of another championship title.
