Liverpool’s struggles continue as coach Arne Slot acknowledges increasing pressure following an alarming losing streak. On Thursday, Slot addressed the media after a disappointing run that has seen the defending Premier League champions lose nine out of their last twelve matches across all competitions. The team’s latest setback came in the form of a 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League, marking their third consecutive loss by three goals or more.
After the match, Slot maintained that he felt secure in his position but recognized the weight of expectation that comes with managing a high-profile club like Liverpool. “There’s a lot of pressure if you work or play at a top club and even more so if you start losing more games than this club, or these players or this manager, is used to,” he stated. “So then there’s always pressure.” He further noted that while there was significant pressure last season to secure the league title, the current pressure stems from a sharp decline in performance.
Liverpool’s title defense is faltering, currently sitting in twelfth place in the Premier League standings, a staggering eleven points behind leaders Arsenal. The team has suffered six losses in its last seven league games, an alarming trend that has fans and analysts concerned. Slot, who enjoyed a near-perfect first season at Anfield by leading Liverpool to a record-equaling twentieth league title, is now facing an uphill battle to turn the situation around.
Despite investing around $500 million (£377 million) in the offseason to bolster the squad with players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, the team has not performed as expected. The contrast between the championship-winning squad and the current form is stark, placing additional pressure on Slot, who succeeded Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp.
Looking ahead, Liverpool is set to face West Ham on Sunday, where they will aim to avoid falling further behind in the title race. “We fight on and we try to improve. That’s what we all try,” Slot remarked. He emphasized the importance of resilience and unity, stating, “In the end it’s about doing what this club is about, keep fighting and no matter how difficult it is, we have to fight together.”
In terms of player availability, goalkeeper Alisson has returned to training after missing the PSV match due to illness, while Wirtz could also be in contention for the West Ham game after dealing with a muscle issue. Slot confirmed that the back problem that forced Hugo Ekitike to leave the pitch during the PSV match is not expected to be serious.
As Liverpool prepares for a crucial encounter, the spotlight remains firmly on Slot and his ability to navigate the challenges ahead.
