Navy Sailor Dies While Rescuing Children from High Surf in Hawaii

A U.S. Navy sailor tragically lost his life on Saturday while attempting to rescue two children caught in dangerous surf conditions at a beach in Kauai, Hawaii. The incident occurred at Waiapua‘a Bay, near the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), where Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz was stationed.

Emergency services responded to reports of a swimmer in distress shortly after the incident was reported. According to the Kauai Police Department, Diaz, 47, entered the water to assist the children who were struggling against the strong waves. While the children were successfully brought back to safety, Diaz faced significant challenges in the turbulent waters.

Rescue teams from the Ocean Safety Bureau and the Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department worked diligently to retrieve Diaz. He was subsequently transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea, where he was pronounced dead.

Background and Service Record

The Navy confirmed that Diaz reported to PMRF in October 2022. His military career included service on the guided-missile destroyer USS Ross and at Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia, among other postings. Diaz enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and achieved the rank of master-at-arms 1st class in 2022.

Throughout his service, Diaz received several awards and decorations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, and the Kosovo Campaign Medal. His dedication to service and commitment to duty were evident in his actions on Saturday.

The incident has drawn attention to the risks associated with ocean activities and the bravery demonstrated by those who attempt to assist others in perilous situations. The Navy and the local community are mourning the loss of a dedicated sailor who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Diaz’s legacy will be remembered not only for his military service but also for his heroic efforts to save lives, reflecting a commitment to public safety and community support.
