A car explosion in a bustling area of Delhi has been confirmed as a “terror incident” by the Indian government. The blast, which occurred near the historic Red Fort on October 9, 2023, resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and injured approximately 20 others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a security meeting on Wednesday, condemning the attack as a cowardly act perpetrated by anti-national forces.
The explosion took place around 18:52 local time (13:52 GMT), when a slow-moving Hyundai i20 car, carrying three individuals, stopped at a red light before detonating. The blast caused significant damage to nearby vehicles and raised immediate security concerns across the capital and surrounding regions.
In an official statement released following the cabinet meeting, the government expressed its commitment to a zero tolerance policy toward terrorism. The cabinet condemned the act, stating, “The country has witnessed a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces, through a car explosion.” They emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and their collaborators without delay.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, and investigations are ongoing. In response to the explosion, police declared a high alert across Delhi and neighboring states, including Uttar Pradesh, which is known for its dense population and iconic sites like the Taj Mahal.
Home Minister Amit Shah assured the public that all possible angles would be explored during the investigation. “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation, taking all possibilities into account,” he stated. The government has mobilized forensic experts and security teams to gather evidence and ensure public safety.
In the aftermath of the explosion, Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi described the incident as “extremely heartbreaking,” reflecting the widespread shock felt across the nation.
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 17th century, serves as a significant landmark in Delhi. It attracts thousands of tourists daily and is often the site of major national events, including the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day speech.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to restore peace and security in the region. The Indian government continues to reaffirm its dedication to combating terrorism and protecting its citizens from such acts of violence.
