Urgent Call to Action for National Breastfeeding Month 2023

UPDATE: August marks the start of National Breastfeeding Month, a critical initiative designed to spotlight the importance of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee is urging immediate action to enhance community, workplace, and policy support for families, emphasizing that breastfeeding is vital for lifelong health and development.

This year’s theme, “Forward Together,” calls on healthcare providers, employers, and policymakers to create supportive environments for breastfeeding. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding not only provides optimal nutrition but also strengthens babies’ immune systems and reduces the risk of chronic illnesses. Mothers benefit too, facing lower risks of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, and postpartum depression.

New data from an epidemiological study published in The Lancet reveals that every additional 12 months of breastfeeding decreases a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 4.3%. However, despite these significant benefits, many families encounter barriers such as inadequate parental leave, lack of workplace accommodations, and persistent social stigma.

To support families during this vital month, citizens are encouraged to:
– Advocate for paid family leave and lactation accommodations in workplaces.
– Promote local breastfeeding-friendly policies and businesses.
– Share resources like La Leche League and Lactation Consultants with new parents.
– Celebrate and support breastfeeding parents in their communities.

In a show of solidarity, the Cottonwood Extension District will hold a celebration on August 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. at the Hays Public Library. This event will highlight breastfeeding support in Ellis County and aims to foster a welcoming environment for breastfeeding families. Refreshments will be served, and attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local resources.

Monique Koerner, Family and Community Wellness Agent with K-State Research and Extension, emphasizes the importance of community support: “Breastfeeding is a personal journey, but no one should have to do it alone.” As we kick off National Breastfeeding Month, let’s ensure that every family has the necessary support from the first latch to the last.
