UPDATE: A widespread phishing scam is currently targeting Amazon shoppers, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns. Consumers are receiving unexpected text messages claiming to offer refunds for recent purchases, but these messages are part of a deceptive scheme designed to steal personal information.
The scam texts purport to be from Amazon, stating there has been a product recall or a quality issue. Recipients are informed they are entitled to a full refund and are urged to click a link to claim their money. However, clicking the link leads to a phishing site, not a legitimate refund process. Instead of receiving money, users risk their financial and personal information being compromised.
Officials stress the urgency of this situation, advising the public to refrain from interacting with suspicious texts or clicking on any links. “If you think a message might be real, don’t trust the contact info in the text,” the FTC cautioned. “Go directly to the company’s official website or app to check your account.”
The FTC recommends that anyone who receives such messages report them immediately by forwarding the texts to 7726 (SPAM) or by using their phone’s “report junk” option. After reporting, delete the message right away to avoid potential risks.
Shoppers concerned about their recent purchases are encouraged to log into their Amazon accounts directly, bypassing any links in the messages, to verify any product issues.
This scam underscores the need for heightened vigilance among online shoppers, particularly as cybercriminals exploit consumer trust during peak purchasing times. Stay alert and protect your information!
