UPDATE: A tragic boat fire off Cape Cod has resulted in the death of Cynthia “Cici” Sullivan, 73, after she was left stranded on an island with her family. The incident unfolded on the night of July 24, 2023, when the Sullivan family’s peaceful evening turned into chaos as they were awakened by barking dogs, fireworks, and smoke engulfing their vessel.
According to officials from the Cape & Islands district attorney’s office, Tyler Sullivan and his parents, Patrick and Cynthia, jumped overboard and swam to a nearby island after their boat caught fire. While Tyler and Patrick managed to survive, Cynthia suffered severe injuries and tragically passed away at a hospital on July 27, 2023.
The family had embarked from Falmouth on Friday, planning a weekend getaway near Naushon Island, the largest in the chain between the Massachusetts mainland and Martha’s Vineyard. By Tuesday evening, concern grew when they had not returned, prompting a search by the Coast Guard and local authorities.
Tyler Sullivan’s quick thinking was crucial; he discovered a marine radio washed up on the beach and called for help on Wednesday morning. “Mayday, mayday, mayday! Our ship went down in Tarpaulin’s Cove!” he told the Coast Guard dispatcher, detailing the family’s desperate situation.
A Coast Guard helicopter quickly responded, rescuing the family and transporting them to a hospital. Patrick Sullivan is currently awake and breathing without assistance, as confirmed by family members on social media.
Chris Sullivan, Tyler’s brother, initially reported their mother’s critical condition but later shared the heartbreaking news of her death. “We played her some John Mellencamp as she passed, he was her absolute favorite,” he posted. “This hurts more than anything I could have ever imagined.”
Scott Backholm, a search and rescue mission coordinator with the Coast Guard, commended the family’s response to the emergency. “Quick thinking and having quality equipment allowed the family to survive and call for help,” he stated.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities seek to determine the cause of the fire. The Sullivan family’s harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of boating and the importance of preparedness.
