UPDATE: Skateboard legend Terry Kennedy is set to walk free from prison on December 31, 2025, just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Illinois Department of Corrections has confirmed that the 40-year-old athlete received sentence credit, allowing for an early release from his five-year prison sentence.
Kennedy, who gained fame in the skating community, was convicted of aggravated battery following a tragic incident that led to the death of fellow skater Josiah Kassahun. The altercation occurred on July 27, 2021, at the Comfort Suites Motel in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. According to court documents, during a heated moment, Kennedy punched Kassahun, who fell and suffered fatal injuries.
Although initially charged with first-degree murder, Kennedy was acquitted of that charge in 2022. He was, however, convicted on two counts of aggravated battery, resulting in consecutive sentences that totaled five years, with the possibility of early release.
Kennedy’s release will be monitored until June 30, 2026, after which he will be fully discharged. Authorities have emphasized the importance of this supervised release period, ensuring that Kennedy has support and guidance as he reintegrates into society.
The skateboard community is abuzz with anticipation as Kennedy prepares to re-emerge. Known for competing in high-profile events like the X Games and the Maloof Money Cup, he has left a significant mark on street skating culture. His appearances in various TV shows, films, and video games have made him a recognizable figure beyond the skateboarding world.
With just 29 days until his release, fans are eagerly awaiting Kennedy’s return. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of violence and the potential for redemption.
As December 31 approaches, the skateboarding world will be watching closely to see how Kennedy navigates his next chapter.
