Massachusetts Governor Healey Launches DRIVE Team to Enhance Innovation

Massachusetts has taken a significant step towards boosting its research and innovation landscape with the announcement of the DRIVE Acceleration Team by Governor Maura Healey. This initiative, part of the broader Discovery, Research, Innovation for a Vibrant Economy (DRIVE) program, aims to enhance the state’s already robust sector, which plays a crucial role in job creation across multiple industries, including education and retail.

The formation of the DRIVE Acceleration Team is intended to solidify Massachusetts’ position as a global leader in innovation. The team is tasked with exploring various strategies to strengthen the research and innovation ecosystem, fostering effective public-private partnerships. In a statement on the Massachusetts government’s official news page, Governor Healey remarked, “People around the world rely on the cures and scientific advancements that come from Massachusetts researchers.” This highlights the importance of the state’s contributions to global health and technology.

Quentin Palfrey, who serves as the Chair of the Acceleration Team, is also the Governor’s Director of Federal Funds and Infrastructure. He emphasized the need for ambitious thinking to expand the sector and create more job opportunities. “Now is the time to think big about how to grow this sector, create more jobs, and strengthen our leadership globally,” Palfrey stated.

Investment to Fuel Growth

In conjunction with this initiative, Governor Healey has proposed legislation to allocate $400 million in state funds. This investment aims to leverage additional private and institutional resources to further energize the sector and retain top talent. Matthew J. Gorzkowicz, the Administration and Finance Secretary, underscored the importance of diverse expert input for the future of Massachusetts’ innovation sector, as shared in a statement from the state.

The roster of DRIVE appointees reflects a wide range of expertise, featuring distinguished individuals from leading institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Northeastern University, and Boston University. Additionally, representatives from the healthcare sector, labor unions, and philanthropic organizations contribute to this impressive team. Together, they share a common objective: to elevate Massachusetts’ status in the fields of research and discovery while bolstering the economy that thrives on these advancements.

With the establishment of the DRIVE Acceleration Team and substantial financial backing, Massachusetts is poised to enhance its innovation landscape significantly, aiming for a future where it continues to lead in scientific and technological breakthroughs. This initiative not only promises to create thousands of jobs but also reaffirms the state’s commitment to fostering an environment ripe for innovation and growth.
