Bread sold at major retailers, including Walmart and Kroger, is being recalled due to the potential presence of undeclared hazelnuts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the recall affects approximately 883 loaves of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf. These products may pose a serious health risk to individuals with nut allergies or severe sensitivities.
The recall notice, issued by Hartford Bakery, Inc., specifies that the affected bread was sold in a dozen states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The affected loaves can be identified by their 12-ounce size, UPC code 24126018152, and expiration date of July 13, 2025. Consumers can find lot codes on the packaging, including T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, and T10 174020406.
According to the recall notice, while no significant injuries have been reported, Hartford Bakery is aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consuming the bread. The company noted that some consumers had visually identified hazelnuts in the product prior to eating it, highlighting the risk posed by the undeclared ingredient.
The packaging for the artisan bread previously included a warning stating that it may contain tree nuts, but did not specify the presence of hazelnuts. An investigation by Hartford Bakery revealed that the issue arose from an error in the packaging process, which involved a mix-up between a hazelnut-containing bread and the implicated white bread product.
Customers who purchased the affected bread are advised to return it to the store for a full refund. For further inquiries, Hartford Bakery can be contacted at 1-812-425-4642 on weekdays from 08:00 to 15:00 CT.
Food safety remains a priority, and consumers are encouraged to stay informed about the products they purchase. The FDA continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
