UPDATE: A retired couple from Greene, Maine, is making headlines today for their tireless advocacy on behalf of seniors at the state legislature. Anne and John White, both in their sixties and seventies, are working harder than ever, focusing on critical issues that affect older Mainers.
After being recognized with the AARP Maine’s 2025 Steadfast Advocate Award, the Whites continue to amplify the voices and concerns of Maine’s seniors. They have become prominent figures at the state capitol, participating in AARP Maine’s initiatives and attending legislative meetings each week.
“AARP staff may give us information on the issue or in some cases, have a legislator or sponsor of the bill speak to our group,” John White stated. Their advocacy work includes attending public discussions and testifying at legislative committee hearings, especially when the issues hit close to home.
As the couple navigates their advocacy journey, they emphasize the importance of issues like Social Security, caregiving, and broadband access—particularly vital for rural communities in Maine. “We advocate for anything that matters to older adults,” said Noel Bonam, state director of AARP Maine.
The couple, married for 43 years and parents to two adult sons, recognizes the complexities of caregiving. “Caregiving is a major concern for many older people,” John explained, noting the challenges families face in finding appropriate care and resources as they seek to age at home.
Anne White, drawing on her experience as a former tax preparer for AARP Maine, enjoys the social aspect of their advocacy. “I feel like I am helping people,” she remarked, highlighting the friendships and connections they’ve made along the way.
The Whites also participate in monthly coffee meetings at the Auburn Recreation Center, where local speakers address various issues impacting seniors. Their consistent presence, often wearing red shirts to symbolize their commitment, has made them familiar faces at the State House.
“Just being exposed to the legislative priorities gives you a feeling like you are contributing a little bit,” John said. Their journey began several years ago after attending a local AARP meet-the-candidates night, sparking their passion for advocating for Maine’s older population.
As they continue their work, the Whites are committed to ensuring that the voices of seniors are not only heard but also acted upon. They urge community members to engage with local issues that matter, emphasizing that grassroots efforts can lead to significant change.
In the coming weeks, the couple plans to attend more legislative sessions and engage with lawmakers to push for reforms that benefit older adults. With their dedication and persistence, the Whites are not only making a difference in their community but also inspiring others to join the cause.
