URGENT UPDATE: The final Island of Misfit Toys toy drive is set for this Sunday, December 17, 2023, in Vallejo, and organizers are urgently calling for last-minute donations to support over 200 children expected at the event. With donations critically low, Executive Director of the Solano AIDS Coalition, Mario Saucedo, fears the drive may not meet the needs of families this holiday season.
Since its inception in 2003, the Island of Misfit Toys toy drive has transformed lives, providing joy and gifts to countless families facing hardships. However, this year, donations have plummeted, with Saucedo reporting only six bags of toys ready to distribute, compared to the usual thirty.
“As we prepare for the finale, we are facing unprecedented challenges,” said Saucedo. “The increase in toy drives across the city has made it difficult for us to gather sufficient donations. It’s a bittersweet moment as we wrap up this beloved initiative after two decades.”
The toy drive’s inception stemmed from a heartfelt conversation between Saucedo and bartender Donna Finney, who sought to uplift families struggling with financial difficulties, particularly those affected by HIV. The first year saw 40 children receiving toys, but the impact has grown immensely since then.
This year’s event will take place from noon until 5 p.m. at 831 Marin St. in Vallejo. Donations can be dropped off at the Immersive Learning Center at 250 Georgia Street, with organizers urging community support to ensure every child receives a gift.
In addition to the urgent plea for donations, Saucedo expressed his gratitude for the community’s support over the years, highlighting key contributors, including local organizations such as the Vallejo and Benicia fire departments, the Better Here Group, and the Vallejo Holistic Health Center. He also honored the late Greg Shoepp, a major benefactor, who donated upwards of $20,000 in toys annually.
“The support we’ve received has been incredible. It’s heartbreaking to see this chapter end, but I am proud of what we have accomplished together,” Saucedo reflected. “This drive has been a labor of love, and it’s truly painful to say goodbye.”
As the community prepares for the last drive, Saucedo emphasizes the importance of coming together one final time to ensure that no child goes without a gift this holiday season. With the economy impacting donations, every contribution counts more than ever.
